Sometimes they are just passing through, other times agreeing that this is a good place to live for the summer and we enjoy their visit. It is a treat for many of us humans to see a movement in the dry brush along our winter paths that were quiet and empty in the harsh days of winter. The birds are moving now, large and small, and we will carve and paint them with enjoyment and companionship.

There will be a variety of selections, larger and smaller birds, colorful and/or plain such as small white swans and black crows that are graceful in form and easy to paint. More colorful species such as a Goldfinch, Bluejay, Woodpecker, Cardinal and a Meadowlark will be offered during the workshop.

Lumberjacks cut the carving wood trees down a year or so ago and now that is dry (seasoned) it is easier to carve if the carving knife supplied is sharpened (it will be!). Each bird pattern will be sawn from blocks of pleasantly scented Atlantic White Cedar, the typical carving wood used by most carvers of the east coast. The first class will allow the student to select the bird pattern that they would like to carve and paint. Each one will have a base if needed. At the end of that class, the instructor will take the rough-carved bird from each student, back to his shop, and use a machine sander to smooth out the surface. After that, he will paint each piece with white primer, and in the next class each student will have to sand any small areas that the machine could not reach. When that detail is completed, the bird may be painted with (supplied) acrylic paints (with their imagination if it is blooming). The white swans and black crows are easiest to paint, but there may be a few unannounced species included before the class starts.

**Seats are limited.**
Participants must sign up ahead of time and MUST be able to attend all three dates.
Supplies will be provided.

Please contact Julie at 609-399-2434 ext. 5222 or email jbrown@oceancitylibrary.org to reserve your seat.

Thursdays, May 4th, May 11th, and May 18th, 2017
9:30am-11:30am
Room N111
Ocean City Free Public Library♦1735 Simpson Ave Ste #4♦Ocean City NJ, 08226
Thu, 04 May 2017 00:00:00 GMT May 4 - Swing Bands are Back! with Cape Shore Jazz Orchestra http://home.oceancitylibrary.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=content.pageDetails&id=78204
CAPE SHORE JAZZ ORCHESTRA
PRESENTS

SWING BANDS ARE BACK
Performing at the Ocean Ciity Senior Centre

Thursday
May 4th 2017 7:00 PM

Big Band Jazz Music From the 40's to Today

Singers Performing Popular Songs You'll Recognize

Featuring
Al Harrison
Joe Rotella
Jim Tagney
Jack Melton
Walt Palmer

At the Ocean City Senior Center♦1735 Simpson Avenue♦Ocean City NJ
Presented by the Ocean City Library
Special Thanks to the Ocean City Library
Thu, 04 May 2017 00:00:00 GMT May 7 - Mystery Writers of America Discuss Mystery, Mayhem & Murder http://home.oceancitylibrary.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=content.pageDetails&id=78209
Celebrate Booklist’s Mystery Month of May at the Library!

If you are in New Jersey . . .

. . . Meanwhile the stubborn and grumpy Gus learns that he has problems with his eyes and need to go to a specialist but he hides the medical recommendation from everybody. Gus's boss and friend Pete Klein knows that baseball is the pride and joy of Gus and a retirement would kill him and asks him to travel to North Caroline to scout the promising player Bo Gentry. Pete also protects Gus from the ambitious colleague Phillip Sanderson (Matthew Lillard) that wants his position and to get Gus fired. Pete visits Gus's estranged daughter Mickey, who is an efficient lawyer that is disputing a partnership in the office where she works with her colleague Todd, and asks her to travel with Gus to North Caroline. Mickey is a great fan of baseball and has a great knowledge of the sport since she used to travel with her father when she was young, but she has a childhood trauma since Gus abandoned her with an uncle when she was a child. In North Caroline, Gus meets the former pitcher Johnny, who had an early retirement due to an injured shoulder and now is scouting for the Red Socks but aiming to be a broadcaster. When he meets Mickey, there is a mutual attraction between them. Along the days, Gus discovers that Gentry has problems with balls pitched in curve and he does not recommend the player to the Brave. He also tells Johnny about Gentry's problem. But when Phillip advises Vince to hire Gentry, Vince's decision affects the lives of Gus, Mickey and Johnny.
Tue, 16 May 2017 00:00:00 GMT May 17 - After School Movies http://home.oceancitylibrary.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=content.pageDetails&id=76370 <p droid="" font-size:="" line-height:="" style="outline: 0px; Dean was nicknamed the King of Cool for his seemingly effortless charisma and self-assuredness, he and Jerry Lewis were partners in the internationally acclaimed comedy team Martin and Lewis; and he was a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack as well as a star in concert and in recordings, motion pictures, and television.

In his one-man show "That's Amore: A Century Of Dean Martin" Dave DeLuca imitates Martin's relaxed, warbling crooning voice as he performs signature songs such as Memories Are Made of This, Everybody Loves Somebody, You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You, Volare, Ain't That a Kick in the Head, and That's Amore.

New Jersey native Dave DeLuca is an accomplished singer, songwriter, musician and recording engineer who has been performing for over 30 years. He is a member of the Songwriter's Guild of America and has had songs published by BMI. In December 2011, Dave auditioned for and won a starring role in the Count Basie Theatre's "5th Annual Sinatra Birthday Bash," beating out hundreds of other hopeful performers. He is currently overseeing production of "The Star-Spangled Songbook", a tribute to the great American composers and lyricists who crafted our body of popular standards, for a future airing on PBS.

Chris Maloney Lecture Hall♦Ocean City Free Public Library♦1735 Simpson Avenue♦Ocean City NJ 08226
www.oceancitylibrary.org
For more information, please call 609-399-2434 ext.5222 or email jbrown@oceancitylibrary.org.

Fri, 19 May 2017 00:00:00 GMT May 20 - Cooking the Classy Way - Memorial Day Goodies http://home.oceancitylibrary.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=content.pageDetails&id=77405
Cooking The Classy Way

With Chef Annmarie Chelius, Classy Chef, LLC

***No Pre-Registration***

**First Come / First Served Basis**

*Class size is limited to 20 people*

“Once 20 recipes are handed out to the first 20 attendees, the Demo is Closed”
****************************************

March 4th - Celebrate National Nutrition Month!
(In partnership with the Ocean City Healthy Living Advisory Board)

April 15th - Easter Treats

May 20th - Memorial Day Goodies

**********************************

All demos are 10am-12pm OR 1-3pm

in the Senior Center Kitchen

*Adults only please!
*NO admittance once the demo has started!
For more info:
jbrown@oceancitylibrary.org

609-399-2434 x5222
Sat, 20 May 2017 00:00:00 GMT May 21 - HOW TO READ JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES http://home.oceancitylibrary.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=content.pageDetails&id=77363
HOW TO READ JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES
A Free Discussion Series
Hosted by Bob DelBene
This non-academic discussion group is designed for the reader who has long been curious about James Joyce's Ulysses, but is reluctant to approach the novel without guidance.
