Free Woodcarving Classes at The Ocean City Free Public Library
A note from Instructor Dave Rhodes:
This new class will present the carving of mid-west fish decoys. These decoys are used in frozen lakes to lure larger game fish to holes cut in the ice by fishermen who hope to spear the fish when they arrive to eat the wooden fish bait.
The fish that we are carving are not weighted but will be displayed on wooden bases or hung from something using a screw eye and string. Students making the lures may decorate them as they wish, painting them realistically from book photos or by using their imagination.
Part of the charm of folk art is the use of materials that are at hand, rather than that which can be bought at a store. Beads or tacks or push pins may be used for eyes, which may also just be painted.
The fish that our class will be carving will be offered in several shapes. The student will need to plan the shape of the fins on a blank piece of paper and I will cut them out of plastic with scissors and cut a groove in the fish body to accept the fins and glue them in. The owner of the wooden blank will need to cut the gills, mouth, and will carefully work in shaping the tail that is left thicker for strength. I will sand the body and prime it with flat rustoleum. The owner will need to sand it smoother again before adding the final colors. I will provide wooden bases, dowels and/or screw eyes for hanging them from above.
Good luck and enjoyment for all!
