“Paradox of Choice”
In our TED talk for January 28th, Psychologist Barry Schwartz discusses, “Paradox of Choice”, taking aim at a central tenet of western
societies: freedom of choice. In Barry's estimation, choice has made us not freer but more paralyzed; not happier, but more dissatisfied.
Barry tackles one of the great mysteries of modern life: Why is it that societies of great abundance — where individuals are offered more freedom and choice (personal, professional, material) than ever
before — are now witnessing a near-epidemic of depression? But as you will learn from him, while conventional wisdom tells us that
greater choice is for the greater good, he makes a compelling case that the abundance of choice in today's western world is actually
making us miserable.
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, and the TED talks feature experts in a variety of fields who present unique ways of looking at their respective fields of expertise.
Everyone is welcome to these free sessions.
A discussion will take place after the lecture.
