Book Talks: Travels to the France of Neandertals, Troubadours, and Truffles

Café Oc Book Talk         Monday, July 17th, 2017    7-8pm

Café Neandertal Book Talk              Wednesday, August 16th, 2017    7-8pm

American author and anthropologist Beebe Bahrami will take us on a journey to southwestern France, reading from

and discussing her two just-released travel memoirs and narratives. The first, Café Oc—A Nomad’s Tales of Magic, Mystery, and Finding Home in the Dordogne of Southwestern France, was released by Shanti Arts Publishing in November 2016. It

explores the rich culture of a region of France that was never industrialized, lives close to the land, and possesses Europe’s highest concentration of prehistoric sites, speaking of a place that has attracted humans for a long time for its excellent food, culture, and climate. Farmers habitually find Neandertal tools when they plow and plant their fields.  Café Neandertal—Excavating Our Past in One of Europe’s Most Ancient Places, released by Counterpoint Press in March 2017, picks up from Cafe Oc and goes even deeper into southwestern France as Bahrami joined an archaeological team excavating Neandertal sites in the region.  Café Neandertal is at once a travel narrative, an archaeological adventure, and an engaging scientific inquiry into who the Neandertals were, who are the people researching them—both the opinionated archaeologists and the passionate local volunteers in the Dordogne—and what they say about who we are and about being human.

Travel Writing Workshop
Wednesday, August 23, 2017      6:30-8:30pm

Great travel writing is great storytelling that offers insights and experiences unique to a certain place and people. Great travel writing is less about the person telling the story than it is how their experiences reveal the character of a place and people, taking the reader into the journey.  In this workshop we will talk about various forms of travel writing and then we will explore this most engaging and storytelling form of travel writing: narrative travel writing. We will delve into the deeper and more timeless stories and experiences of a place. In doing so, each participant will draw on his or her own travels, which can be as near as a local setting right here in southern New Jersey or as far flung as travels to Vietnam or France or elsewhere. In our two hours together, we will engage exercises that unearth the stories of journeys each person wants to tell, we will hone in on what those stories are at their core, and we will explore ways to write stories at their best.

Bring a blank notebook/notepad and pen/pencil to the workshop. Be prepared to have fun brainstorming, reading out loud some great travel writing samples (provided by Beebe), doing engaging writing exercises, and discussing with each other the results toward seeking the central spine and direction of your stories.
