Chrystia Freeland

“The rise of the new global super-rich”

The TED talk for this Saturday is by Chrystia Freeland, who was elected to Canada’s Parliament in 2013, and in January this year appointed to be Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and is entitled, “The rise of the new global super-rich.”

Technology is advancing in leaps and bounds -- and so is economic inequality, notes Chrystia. In an impassioned talk, she charts the rise of a new class of plutocrats (those who are extremely powerful because they are extremely wealthy), and suggests that globalization and new technology are actually fueling, rather than closing, the global income gap. Chrystia lays out three problems with plutocracy … and one glimmer of hope.

Chrystia is the author of Sale of the Century, a 2000 book about Russia's journey from communism to capitalism, Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich. The Fall of Everyone Else was a New York Times bestseller and the winner of the 2013  Lionel Gelber Prize for non-fiction reporting on foreign affairs and the 2013 National Business Book Award for the most outstanding Canadian business-related book.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, and the TED talks feature experts in a variety of fields who present unique ways of looking at their respective fields of expertise.

Everyone is welcome to these free sessions.

A discussion will take place after the lecture.
