“The New American Dream”
Our TED talk on Saturday, March 24, features Courtney Martin’s talk, “The New American Dream”. For the first time in history, the majority of American parents don't think their kids will be better off than they were. This shouldn't be a cause for alarm, says Courtney. Rather, it's an opportunity to define a new approach to work and family that emphasizes community and creativity. "The biggest danger is not failing to achieve the American Dream," she says in her talk that will resonate far beyond the US. "The biggest danger is achieving a dream that you don't actually believe in."
In her new book, The New Better Off, Courtney, a journalist, explores how people are redefining the American dream with an eye toward fulfillment. Courtney is a columnist for On Being, and the cofounder of the Solutions Journalism Network, Valenti Martin Media, and FRESH Speakers, an editor emeritus at Feministing.com. In her previous book Do It Anyway: The New Generation of Activists, she pro?led eight young people doing social justice work, a fascinating look at the generation of world-changers who are now stepping up to the plate.
And in this talk, Courtney has taken this to heart and challenges us to reassess, rethink, and reinvent the very notion of what a ‘good life’ might be. The New Better Off is an invaluable source of insight and inspiration for those wishing to embark on one of post-consumer society’s most important projects.
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, and the TED talks feature experts in a variety of fields who present unique ways of looking at their respective fields of expertise.
Everyone is welcome to these free sessions.
A discussion will take place after the lecture.
