Grove Music Online
This extraordinary database offers a wealth of information about all types of music. Full-text search with advanced capabilities is available and the site features over 3000 links to related sites, including sound archives and illustrations. In addition to the regular programme of revisions and new articles, Grove Music Online has grown to include The New Grove Dictionary of Opera (published in print in 1992 and online in 1999) and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, second edition (2001).

American Music Resource
AMR contains bibliographies, lists and text files about all styles of American music and related issues. The collection is indexed by subject-name (i.e. the last names of composers) or topic-name (e.g. Electro-acoustic music).

History of Country Music

This is "a complete online database of recorded music." It has a search engine that allows searching by artist name, album title, song title, label, and musical style. Biographies, full discographies, and album reviews are available for artists. Essays and a glossary are provided as is a unique feature: music maps, which trace a particular style's development from other musicical styles.

Freegal Music is a downloadable music service based on the Sony digital music library with over 500,000 songs available.

Freegal Music offers DRM-free music downloads in MP3 format that can play on any MP3 player, including the iPod. Downloaded music can be loaded into iTunes and on both PCs and Macs. Songs don’t expire, you own them!

Library cardholders are limited to 3 downloaded tracks a week and your limit resets on Sunday at midnight.

Freegal Tips

  • Listening: To preview a song, click the circular arrow icon to the left of the song title to hear a snippet of the song.
  • Important: If you click “Download Now,” play the song, but do not “Save” it you will use up one download for the week.
  • Downloading: To download a song, click the "Download Now" link to its right. Click "Save" and select somewhere to save it on your home computer or a Flash drive.
  • Important: Any time you click on the "Download Now" link, even if you “Cancel” the download, you have used up one of your three downloads for the week!
