The 2020 US Open was held at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, one of golf’s four majors. Siwanoy Country Club, a country club located in Bronxville, hosted the first PGA Championship in 1916, which was won by Jim Barnes. Golf first gained popularity in the United States during the Gilded Age, with Westchester County becoming home to one of the nation’s first golf clubs. The popularity of golf skyrocketed with the advent of live television and the charisma of golf’s first superstar, Arnold Palmer. Palmer’s charm and talent helped him become a worldwide celebrity and he mastered using his celebrity to lift the popularity of golf to new heights, making golf the tremendously popular sport it is today.

Guest speaker Evan Weiner is an award-winning sports journalist.
